NHL Playoff Picks from Ron Raymond

Hi Friends,

Now, that I’m able to write, but still hampered with my cast which is schedule to be removed on Friday, I will have a more active blog and encourage you to leave a message or comment. As for the first round of the series, everything seems as plan in Round 1, but I’m dissapointed in the Blue Jackets inability to score on the road in their first 2 games and the no shows in San Jose. Bob Gainey cannot switch Kovalev from line to line, but I did like the fact he was playing him on the first line and the 4th line. Here’s my picks for Monday, April 20th.

Boston – Montreal; UNDER 5.5 -130 (5* BEST BET)

Keys to selection: The venue shifts to the Bell Centre in Montreal and the Canadiens are looking forward to having the home crowd behind them this evening. Carey Price is not the reason why the Canadiens are down 2-0 in this series, Montreal is being outcoached and Bob Gainey doesn’t have a clue where to put Kovalev. Players need to find a comfort level and rhythm with their line mates and not knowing who your line mate is on the next shift, is horrible for a player. Plus, Montreal seems to have some hidden tricks up their sleeves and one has to wonder if Markov or even Robert Lang will surprisingly show up in the line up. Playing Montreal is a risk at this point of the year, but the UNDER is 4-0-0 when they are a home underdog this season. Carey Price plays very well at the Bell Centre, he’s 13-4 SU at home this season and the UNDER is 4-1-0 for Montreal in their last 5 home games. On the other hand, Boston is 3-7 SU in their last 10 trips to Montreal and without Lucic in the line up, will give the Montreal defenseman some breathing room, as he’s been getting in their heads with his thunderous body checks. Play the UNDER 5.5 -130.

NYR +110 vs. Washington (2* TOP PLAY)

Keys to selection: The Washington Capitals look like a fish out of water in Game #1 and #2, while Bruce Boudreau is being outcoached by John Tortorella. Furthermore, the Caps have yet to figure out Henrik Lundqvist and the Caps are 2-8 SU in their last 10 trips to MSG. Great value on the Rangers!

Chicago +120 vs. Calgary (FREE PICK)

Keys to selection: The Calgary Flames have lost 6 straight games to the Chicago Black Hawks and Nikolai Khabibulin is 22-5-2 vs. the Flames in his career and 15-3 SU at the Saddledome. Therefore, to say he’s been in the Flames head would be an understatement. Chicago has been the better team in this series, as they’ve been playing more discipline and goaltending has been their strength. No doubt, the first 10 minutes in this game tonight will be crucial for the Flames if they intend to sneak back into this series. If the Hawks can withstand the heat in the first 10 minutes and keep the Flames off the scoreboard, they win this game in my opinion. Take the Value and bet on the better team in Chicago who’s riding the hotter goalie.

Ron’s Comment: Tough spot for the Blue Jackets, as they are coming off a shootout win last night over the Penguins, travelled overnight to the Windy city and must now face a well rested Hawks team. Plus, this is a big division game and the Jackets haven’t done well on the road vs. division teams, as they are 1-6 SU this season. As of this write up, there’s no line on this game, but once the bookmaker releases the line, let’s go with a Law of Average play on the Hawks. Furthermore, according to my online sources, it appears Wade Dubielewicz is favored to get the nod between the pipes. Dubie is a solid back up goalie, but the team in front of him might collapse in the later part of the game.

LA Kings vs. Vancouver

Ron’s Comment: The Canuck are having a good month of March and are currently 7-3 SU in their last 10 games and when you look at their last 2 loses, they’ve been by 1 goal. Vancouver is in the game right up to the end of late and that’s all you can ask for when betting on a team, just give you a shot till the last whistle. However, to lay down -230 is not my way of betting, so maybe parlay it with the Hawks OVER. When LOS ANGELES team played as Road team as a Underdog – Vs Non Division Opponent – Coming off vs. Northwest division opponent – Coming off a 1 goal win; the Kings are 1-9-2 SU in this situation since 1998.

This guy is a wrecking ball for the Stars and the quicker they move him off the team, the better the Stars will be as a team now that they have Steve Begin. Plus, then the Stars quality players can concentrate on playing hockey again. In fact, I’m pretty sure his teammates are going to get fed up sticking up and getting involved in stupid retaliatory scrums because Ott is looking to take peoples head off, instead of concentrating on playing hockey. Cam Ward has been money the last few weeks and Tortorella has given the Rangers a whole new edge and look! Canes are coming off a big 9-3 win over Tampa Bay and the Rangers are coming off an NBC Game of the Week win over Boston. When it’s all said and done; the two goalies will be the first and second star of this game and the third star will be the player who nets the winner. My lean goes to the Canes, as the Rangers are 1-6 SU in their last 7 road games. When CAROLINA team played as a home team – Last 4 years – During the month of March; The Hurricanes are 15-5 SU at home the last 4 seasons in this spot.
